Dar Al-Uloum Library

Sakata, Al Jouf Region, Saudi Arabia
2018

The main idea of the new addition to the Dar Al-Uloum Library is its reinterpretation in the current information and media culture. The new library will not be merely linear vessel of books and information. It is not just a building filled with books and merely accommodates reading. It will embrace a new culture of information. The space is developed as a continuous differentiation of activities and functions. Instead of being a linear encapsulated space, the library becomes a structure that accommodates “field” of activities and functions. This non-linear and smooth differentiation of space reflects the contemporary information culture.

This new interpretation opens a new possibility of learning, doing, and sharing. Interaction, encounter, and dialogue are nourished as well as learning, activities and peaceful immersion in books.

The administration and storage will be accommodated in the existing Dar Al-Uloum library. The public services and public area are grown from the existing building and site.

Gender separation is accommodated while open a new and unique possibility of dialogue and interaction.

The unique articulation of space and architecture elements also embrace the sustainability aspect of the project.  The energy efficiency is developed according to the local climate.

The new Dar Al-Uloum library will not diminish its root in this historical institution. Instead, it will grows from its historical and contextual “ground”, embracing the future of the information culture.
